GST registration document size limits: 1 MB, 500 KB and 100 KB

Checked against official sources on 25 October 2026

For GST registration, proof of constitution of business (partnership deed, incorporation certificate and similar) and a rent or lease agreement can be a PDF or JPEG of up to 1 MB. Address proofs such as an electricity bill, consent letter, property tax receipt or municipal khata copy are limited to 500 KB. Photographs of stakeholders and the authorised signatory must be JPEG of up to 100 KB, and the proof of appointment of the authorised signatory is also capped at 100 KB.

Getting each document under the limit

For a 1 MB document, open Compress PDF and tap 1 MB. For address proofs, tap 500 KB, and for the signatory appointment proof type 100. If your bill is a photo, first turn it into a PDF with JPG to PDF, then compress it. Photographs must stay as JPEG, so resize those with your phone's photo editor.

Why the portal rejects files that look small enough

Portals usually measure in binary units, where 1 MB is 1,024 KB. PDF Sevak uses the same units, so a file it reports as under 1 MB will pass a 1 MB check.

Check the limit on screen

The GST portal shows the allowed size next to each upload box, and GSTN has raised some limits before (address proofs went from 100 KB to 500 KB). If the box shows a different figure from this page, follow the box.
