Income Tax portal attachment size limit (e-Proceedings): 5 MB per file
Checked against official sources on 25 October 2026
On the Income Tax e-filing portal, each attachment you upload while responding to a notice in e-Proceedings can be at most 5 MB, and all attachments in one response together at most 50 MB. If a document is bigger, compress it to under 5 MB or split it into parts named _1, _2 and so on.
| Upload | Maximum size |
|---|---|
| Each attachment | 5 MB |
| All attachments in one response | 50 MB |

How to bring a document under 5 MB
Open Compress PDF and tap 5 MB. Scanned bank statements and ledgers usually shrink well below this. If a very long scan still does not fit, split it with Split PDF into two or three parts, name them clearly (for example ledger_1.pdf, ledger_2.pdf), and compress each part.
Scan settings that keep files small
Scan at 150 to 200 dpi in greyscale rather than colour unless colour matters. Save directly as PDF, one file per document. A 100-page greyscale statement at these settings normally fits comfortably within 5 MB after compression.
Responses cannot be edited
According to the department's FAQ, a response cannot be edited or withdrawn after submission. Open every compressed file and check it is readable before you submit.
